How recent legislation modifying laws governing nonprofit groups might require "tinkering" of nonprofit groups' bylaws will be the focus of an upcoming seminar presented by the Better Business Bureau Foundation of Hawai'i. The free seminar, "HAWAI'I'S NONPROFITS LAW MODIFICATIONS," will be held 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. July 23 at 1132 Bishop St., Conference Room 306. Among the legislative-mandated changes are alterations to rules governing membership voting and bylaws; more detailed requirements for report-keeping, and a prominent change in the Non-Profit Corporations Act requirements for fiduciary duties of directors and officers. The seminar presenter will be Cynthia Winegar, partner with Watanabe Ing and Kawashima law firm, and head of the firm's nonprofits group. She is a former vice president of a local nonprofit organization and has served on the board of a number of others, including Aloha United Way, Palama Settlement, Child and Family Service and YMCA. Another legislative update of changes that would affect community associations will be held Thursday, sponsored by the local chapter of the COMMUNITY ASSOCIATIONS INSTITUTE. The seminar, intended for association board members, managers or homeowners, is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. registration to 1:30 p.m. at the Hale Koa Hotel at Fort DeRussy. Fee; nonmembers welcome. "Japan's Economy: Any Hope Left?" will be the focus of a speech Wednesday by Sumner La Croix, chairman of the University of Hawai'i-Manoa economics department. La Croix will speak to the monthly buffet luncheon meeting of the HAWAI'I ECONOMIC ASSOCIATION, 11:45 a.m. registration, at The Plaza Club at Pioneer Plaza. The MINORITY BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER OF HONOLULU will offer free weekly orientation sessions to minority business owners and prospective entrepreneurs.
