'Baby's First Bikini' swimwear line hits the market

Itty Bitty Hawaii's "My First Bikini" line was dreamed up by Jennifer Sheridan, who founded the company and designed the bikini ware.

Sometimes, creative ideas are born of necessity. A little over a year ago, Jennifer Sheridan of Pupukea was searching for the perfect baby gift — a bikini — for North Shore newborn Kaya Gazzara. She was shocked to find the skimpiest of swimwear, little more than a thong, and unlined.

"No way was I going to give little Kaya one of those suits," Sheridan said.

Now Kaya is 18 months old, and this month, her Auntie Jennifer launched a line called "My First Bikini" through her new company, Itty Bitty Hawaii.

The cutesy concept extends to the packaging. The bikini comes in a pink box with a gift card that has a place for baby's photo, sporting her new suit, of course. It's meant to become a keepsake item for the care and storing of baby's first bikini.

The bikinis, for children ages 6 months to 6 years, can be worn over a diaper. They are made in Hawai'i by the established swimwear company Soleil, owned by Susan Izu.

Izu has been generous with her knowledge and expertise in manufacturing because she believes Sheridan is onto something. "It's such a cute idea. The packaging is so different and I think it will go well," Izu said.

The bikinis are made of nylon/spandex and the ties are adjustable, allowing for a flexible fit. Prints include retro red cherries on white or pink, baby pink with white bows, denim, gingham and blue aloha prints. And, yes, they are lined.

The first orders were being delivered last week, and response from buyers has been positive. DFS Galleria plans to build a special kiosk for Itty Bitty Hawaii. Splash! has ordered, as have North Shore Swimwear, Pink C, Maui Clothing Co. and Surf & Sea. "My First Bikini" retails for $32 to $35.
