HONOLULU

State awarded energy grants

The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded the state a total of $450,000 for five energy efficiency and renewable energy projects.

"These awards rank us among the top states in the nation in dollar amounts awarded," said Seiji Naya, director of the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism. "What's more, we were successful in obtaining funds for every project we proposed."

The projects will help conserve energy, provide jobs, increase energy security and reduce the need for new electricity-generating plants, the department said.

The largest grant of $150,000 will go to the Hydrogen Power Park at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority at Keahole on the Big Island. The project's goal is to introduce hydrogen infrastructure into the state.

Kaua'i film head leaving position

The woman who helped lure a host of moviemakers, TV shows and commercials to Kaua'i is stepping down from her job to pursue other interests.

Kaua'i Film Commissioner Judy Drosd says she's quitting at the end of this month. "I am truly leaving in order to pursue other opportunities," Drosd said Friday. "It won't be a secret when they develop."

Prior to coming to Kaua'i, Drosd spent 20 years in the television and motion picture business and was working as a vice president of production for Home Box Office.

She was hired as Kaua'i film commissioner in 1992 and was largely responsible for luring production of Steven Spielberg's first "Jurassic Park" movie to the island. Hundreds of television shows and commercials have been filmed on Kaua'i through the efforts of Drosd's office.
