L&L co-founder recognized
Eddie Flores Jr., co-founder and president of L&L Drive-Inn, the fastest growing franchise restaurant in the Hawai'i, has been awarded the 2002 Filipinas Achievement Award in Entrepreneurship.
He is one of the 10 Filipino Americans recognized by Filipinas Magazine for his outstanding contributions to the community.
While still a child, the Hong Kong-born Flores used to sell cut-up fruit for cash. As a University of Hawai'i student, he earned money by showing soccer films and charging $1 admission.
He chairs the Filipino Community Center and Honolulu Board of Water Supply and is the director of the American Red Cross, Goodwill Industries, Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Mid Pacific Institute and Aloha United Way.
Six honored by kidney group
A number of medical personnel and one patient from St. Francis Healthcare Systems Hawaii were recently honored by the National Kidney Foundation of Hawaii. They are:
- Medical Professional of the Decade, Roland Ng, M.D. Ng, a nephrologist, has been practicing medicine in the islands for more than 20 years. He was recognized for his contributions in the prevention of kidney disease.
- Medical Professional of the Year, Marjorie Mau, M.D., a specialist in internal medicine and diabetes, endocrinology and metabolism, she has procured several research grants from such organizations as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and American Diabetes Association affiliates.
- Humanitarian of the Year, St. Francis patient, Lorena Diego of Maui. She is Hawai'i's first and only altruistic kidney donor who, last year, donated her kidney to Eddie Ralar.
- Receiving recognition for the Diego-Ralar transplant were Transplant Surgeon and St. Francis Medical Director of Kidney Transplant Whitney Limm, M.D., Transplant Evaluation Coordinator Catherine Bailey, R.N. and Transplant Director Donna Pacheco, R.N.
Poster contest winners named
Yim Sum "Eve" Tang, a fifth grader at 'Aina Haina Elementary, has taken first place in this year's statewide Arbor Day Poster Contest.
Susan Spangler from the Outdoor Circle presented the award certificates.
Marissa Pang, a fifth grader at Mililani Mauka Elementary, represented Hawai'i at the National Arbor Day poster contest in Nebraska. Her winning poster will be on display along with those from other states at the Botanical Garden in Washington D.C.
Both Tang and Pang received $50 gift certificates from Eddie Bauer, a book and a tote bag from the National Arbor Day Foundation.
Honorable mention winners are:
Katie Yoza and Patrick Young of 'Aina Haina Elementary, Cole Parongao and Virginia Ka'aihue from 'Ele'ele Elementary on Kaua'i, and Hannah Ione and James Jamorabon from Kalihi Elementary.
This year's contest theme was "Trees Are Terrific ... inside and out."
