Former University of Hawai'i standout Heather Bown scored 20 points and Danielle Scott added 18 as the United States' women's national volleyball team posted its first win in the 2002 FIVB World Grand Prix, 3-1 over Cuba, last night at Chengdu, China.
Bown hit a blistering .652 with a match-high 16 kills, three blocks and one service ace to lead Team USA to the 21-25, 25-18, 28-26, 25-18 win. Scott had a hitting percentage of .500 to go along with 13 kills, four blocks and one ace.
Logan Tom added 13 points on 11 kills and two blocks as the United States finished the first leg of the monthlong tournament with a 1-2 record in Pool B after losses to Russia (3-2) and China (3-0). Cuba finished the first week without a win (0-3).
"We won, and I got a block," said 5-foot-9 setter Robyn Ah Mow, a former McKinley High and UH star. "Our passing was good, so we could use the middles on side out. And blocking was off the hook."
