Slow Food plans July 27 buffet

By Wanda A. Adams
Advertiser Food Editor

The new Slow Food Hawaii group, dedicated to preserving authentic foodways and artisanal foods, is planning a "Farmers Market Buffet — A Low Country Boil," 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. July 27 in Hau'ula.

The gathering will include a tour of Jeanne Vana's heirloom tomato farm in Hau'ula and a buffet lunch featuring North Shore products. Profits will be used to finance Hawai'i's display at Slow Food's premier international event, the Salone del Gusto in Turin, Italy.

The product that has been chosen for showcasing is Richard Spiegel's rare organic white kiawe honey from Puako on the Big Island.

The Farmers Market Buffet is limited to 50 people; tickets are $15 for Slow Food Hawaii members, $20 for others.

To find out more, contact Pam Farris, who can be reached from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 947-6404.

Great prizes for cracker recipes

In an effort to promote their new line of Harvest Bakery crackers, the Keebler Co. is sponsoring a recipe competition with a first prize that's worth a second look: New KitchenAid appliances and a $40,000 kitchen remodel.

Five other prizewinners will receive a KitchenAid refrigerator, and 100 others will receive a new cookbook by lifestyle expert Katie Brown.

In the contest, called "Top It & Win," they're looking for ideas for great toppings for crackers, making the crackers into a mini-meal. The contest deadline is Oct. 21. Send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to receive rules and regulations: Top It & Win, P.O. Box 8566 Prospect Heights, IL 60070.

Hawai'i cooking featured on QVC

Karen Bacon, Maui editor of "Tasting Paradise: Restaurants & Recipes of the Hawaiian Islands" (Coastal Impressions Press) was featured on QVC's "Now You're Cooking" last month, showing off dishes from Island restaurants.

She didn't carry the food to QVC headquarters in Philadelphia; she hired a stylist to prepare dishes according to the chefs' recipes. She did take a lei for host Bob Bowersox. Bacon was touting the book's second edition.

Correction: The O'ahu contact for reservations for the Slow Food Hawaii Farmers Market is Pam Farris, who can be reached from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 947-6404. Richard Spiegel's Volcano Island Rare Kiawe White Honey is from Puako, not Volcano. An previous version of these briefs was incorrect.
