The victim is in guarded condition at The Queen's Medical Center. He told police he had contacted a third man, 41, to ask about money he was owed.

Kaua'i police warn of 'prize' scam

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — If "Readers Digest" calls and asks you to send money to collect a prize, it's not Readers Digest.

Kaua'i police report that someone is calling elderly residents with a scam that asks them to pay a fee in order to collect a cash award.

"Legitimate sweepstakes or prize offers don't ask for payment because it's illegal," says the National Fraud Information Center on its Web site.

Assistant Kaua'i Police Chief Gordon Isoda said several residents have called police to say they have received such calls.

"In general, we think the public should be highly suspect of these calls," he said.

Isoda urged victims of this scam to call police at 241-6711.
