Five Hawai'i golfers entered in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at the Orchards Club in Washington Township, Mich., failed to qualify for the stroke play of the championship yesterday.

Isaac Jimison shot a course record 7-under-par 65, following his first round 68, to earn medalist honors. Runner-up Eric Jorgensen shot 68-68—136.

Richard Kimi of Hilo (76-74—150), Jay Kurisu of Wailuku (77-73—150), Shannon Sibayan of Kapa'a (75-78—153), Guy Yamamoto of Waipahu (76-77—153) and Christian Akau of Waipahu (81-78—159) missed the cut of 146.

Kevin Warrick, of Valrico, Fla., a former Leilehua High School golfer, shot a 72-71—143.

The top 64 players will compete in the first round of stroke play today.

SURFING

• Andy Irons impressive: Hawai'i surfers Andy Irons and Sunny Garcia were the standouts on the opening day of the Billabong Pro yesterday at Jeffreys Bay, South Africa.

The first round was completed in barreling waves that ranged from 6 to 8 feet.

Irons, who is currently the world's No. 1-ranked surfer, posted the highest total of the first round with a two-wave score of 19.0 (out of 20).

He recorded the only perfect 10 of the day after riding through a series of barrels on one 8-foot wave. He followed that with a 9.0 for another multi-barrel wave.

"It's incredible out there," said Irons, who is from Hanalei, Kaua'i. "I'm just stoked to get some perfect waves."

Garcia, the 2000 world champion, received scores of 9.5 and 7.0 to easily win his first-round heat.

With first-round wins, both Garcia and Irons advanced directly to the third round.

Shane Dorian of the Big Island and Kalani Robb from O'ahu's North Shore placed second in their respective heats and will have to compete in the loser-out second round.

The contest is the fifth of 12 stops on surfing's World Championship Tour.

ARENA FOOTBALL

• Islanders' Taylor honored: The Hawaiian Islanders' Nian Taylor was named the arenafootball2 Iron Man National Player of the Week after his performance last week against the Arkansas Twisters.

Taylor had 337 all-purpose yards in an 83-73 loss at Little Rock, Ark.

The award is given to a player who excels on offense and defense.

Taylor caught eight passes for 150 yards and three touchdowns, and returned nine kickoffs for 187 yards.

On defense, he had a 14-yard interception return for a touchdown, two tackles and two pass breakups.

Taylor joined the Islanders late last month after spending the first eight games of the season with the Richmond Speed.

The Islanders (3-11) play their final home game of the season at 7:10 p.m. Saturday against the Quad City (Iowa) Steamwheelers at Blaisdell Arena. Their final game is July 27 at Fresno, Calif.

The first yacht could cross the finish line early Friday morning, according to race officials.

Leading the entire fleet with under 700 miles to Kane'ohe, is the doublehanded Wildflower, a Wylie Custom 27.

Another Hawai'i entry, Lahaina's Naughty Hotty continues to lead its division, which consists of yachts in the 38- to 49-foot range.
