Kamehameha to hold community meetings

Advertiser Staff

Kamehameha Schools announced this morning that the charitable trust will hold six months of statewide commuity meetings starting next month on the issues raised by the admission of a non-Hawaiian student at its Maui campus.

The announcement was made by Hamilton McCubbin, chief executive officer for the schools, and J. Douglas Ing, chairman of the board of trustees.

Kamehameha Schools last week annouced a non-Hawaiian would be admitted to the Maui school. That annoucement drew an angry reaction from Kamehameha Schools alumni at a meeting Monday night during which some alumni called for the trustees resignation.

The trustees apologized for lack of communication with the Hawaiian community, and said they wanted to revise the admissions policy so the Maui decision would never happen again.

The meetings starting next month will be open to the public, according to Ing and McCubbin.
