Board member Sakurai won't run
Board of Education member Winston Sakurai has announced he will not seek re-election this year.
Sakurai, 29, has been the Windward O'ahu District member since 1993, when he was appointed by Gov. John Waihee to fill a vacancy on the board. He was last re-elected in 1998.
Sakurai, of Kane'ohe, said he would spend more time with his family. He and his wife, Rochelle, are planning to start a family in a few years, and his father is undergoing treatment for cancer.
He also said he would have more time to devote to his duties as a history teacher at Hanalani Schools and minister at Honolulu Bible Church.
Three Lahainaluna teachers honored
Three Lahainaluna High School teachers have received Educator of the Month awards from Leilani's on the Beach, a Ka'anapali restaurant that supports local educators.
Art teacher Sidney Yee, the April recipient, has been on the Lahainaluna faculty since 1971. He teaches drawing, painting and ceramics and is a member of the school's standards implementation team.
English teacher Shanda Arume, the May recipient, works closely with students to reinforce organizational skills and study habits. She is also the freshman class advisor.
Career guidance counselor and art teacher Stephen Pisacano, the June recipient, helps students plan their academic and career goals and invites local business professionals into the classroom for presentations.
Hundreds to learn leadership at UH
The 14th annual Student Leadership Workshop will be held at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa next week in the Campus Center Ballroom.
The July 24-26 workshop gives training in political leadership, the legislative process and skills to be effective leaders to 250 students and advisors from more than 30 secondary schools across the state.
It is sponsored by the Hawaii State Student Council, state
Department of Education and UH Office of Co-Curricular Activities, Programs and Services.
Sacred Hearts announces awards
Several members of the Sacred Hearts Academy family have received national recognition.
Maile Galacgac, a junior, was awarded a $2,500 scholarship by the Discover Card Tribute Award Program, given to 412 juniors nationwide who demonstrate excellence in many areas of their lives.
The school's music department was named a finalist in the Oscar Mayer Talent Search School House Jam contest and won $10,000. The school will compete with 49 other states for a chance to be in a commercial for Oscar Mayer products.
Also, Deborah Kula, the mathematics department chairwoman, has been named one of 110 to be honored with the Radio Shack National Teacher Award. Kula received a gift and $500 grant for her classroom or department.
Iolani teacher at Holocaust session
Iolani School history teacher Sheila McKibbin was one of 250 educators from across the country who attended the eighth annual Arthur and Rochelle Belfer National Conference for Educators in Washington, D.C., on July 7-9.
The three-day session provided teachers with strategies on presenting the complex history of the Holocaust to students. It was held at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
