Six crew members from a Japanese fishing vessel were rescued off Wake Island by the U.S. Coast Guard today. The Katsuura Maru 28 put out a distress call around midnight saying the boat was taking on water 287 miles southwest of Wake Island, said Coast Guard officials.
The Coast Guard's long-range rescue aircraft located the six Japanese crew members on a life raft at 2 a.m., and dropped a kit containing extra life rafts and survival gear until a nearby vessel picks up the crew.
It is unclear if the Katsuura Maru sank, and the cause of the incident is under investigation, said Erica Ryan, a Coast Guard petty officer.
