Wahine bid for volleyball tourney

The University of Hawai‘i has bid “over $100,000” to host the premier kickoff event of the women’s collegiate volleyball season, the NACWAA/State Farm Volleyball Classic, for next year.“I think we have a very good chance (of getting it); I don’t know how anybody can out-bid Hawai‘i,” said Marilyn Moniz-Kaho‘ohanohano, UH assistant athletic director and senior women’s administrator.
It is UH’s first bid for the event and an announcement is expected next month.
UH has led the nation in women’s volleyball attendance for eight consecutive years, ever since the Stan Sheriff Center opened.
In four of the seven previous State Farm Classics, at least half the four-team field has advanced to the NCAA final four.
“I think it would be great if we get to host it,” said Dave Shoji, Rainbow Wahine volleyball coach. “It is something we have been talking about.”
UH has twice played in the event but has not served as a host. The Rainbow Wahine won the event in 1996, the year they made it to the NCAA Championship match, with victories over Florida and Nebraska.
