TIP-OFF
Concert will feature island sound, comedy

Contemporary island music and local-style comedy share the spotlight when Kalapana, The Mana'o Company and Andy Bumatai are featured in a concert at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 30 at the Hawai'i Ballroom of the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

The three-hour program is somewhat of a hana hou for Kalapana, the Hawai'i group with international appeal, who appeared last year in the same venue in its first concert since the death of founding member Mackey Feary.

The August gig brings back the 1970s hits of Kalapana, including "Songbird," "The Hurt," "Juliette," "Naturally" and "Black Sand." A new album, the group's 14th, is expected shortly.

The Mana'o Company, big winners in this year's Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, has been a pioneer of the Jawaiian musical movement. After a 10-year hiatus, TMC last year reorganized and recorded "Spread a Little Aloha," its comeback CD, with remakes of two signatures from the past, "96 Degrees in the Shade" and "Drop Baby Drop."

Bumatai, once billed as Hawai'i's First Stand-Up Comic, has previously starred in Waikiki engagements, including a run at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, and has had vast TV exposure in such vehicles as "All in the 'Ohana" and "Marker." Tickets: $45, $35, $25, on sale at the Sheraton and Ticket Plus outlets, including Foodland and Sack 'N Save outlets.

Reservations: 922-4422 (Sheraton), 526-4400 (Ticket Plus) or online at www.ticketplushawaii.com.
