Ernie Martin, Rep. Djou run for City Council

City administrator Ernie Martin yesterday filed nomination papers to run for the Honolulu City Council representing District 2 (Mililani Mauka, Wahiawa, North Shore, Kane'ohe).

Martin, 42, is chief executive of the Office of Special Projects within the city's Department of Community Services. He is a lawyer and served for four years on the Waipahu Neighborhood Board. He has worked for the city for more than 15 years, focusing on diverse community-based projects targeting social and economic issues.

"Public service should always be about putting people first," Martin said.

Also yesterday, state Rep. Charles Djou, the House minority floor leader, filed his nomination papers to run for the City Council's District 4, which stretches from Waikiki to Hawai'i Kai.

After the state Reapportionment Commission decided on new boundaries for political districts, Republican Djou found himself in the same district as a fellow Republican and decided not to run for the state Legislature from Windward O'ahu.

Djou, an attorney, moved to East Honolulu to run. "Although I'm disappointed the redistricting commission eliminated my House seat, I am excited to bring my enthusiasm for reform to city government in desperate need of new leadership," he said.

Former city managing director and state official Bob Fishman is also running for that seat.
