Lahaina to discuss citizen foot patrol

LAHAINA, Maui — A proposal for a citizens foot patrol to deter crime in Lahaina town will be discussed at a meeting Thursday at the Pioneer Inn courtyard.

The meeting, sponsored by the Lahaina Town Action Committee, will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and is open to the public.

The proposal calls for the foot patrol to operate daily from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The patrol would act as the eyes and ears of police but would not confront lawbreakers, officials said.

Speakers at the meeting will include the Rev. Laki Ka'ahumanu, founder of the Lahaina Town Crime Watch, and law enforcement officials.
