Gouveia to join Warrior staff

By Stephen Tsai

Kurt Gouveia, a Wai'anae High graduate who played 13 seasons in the National Football League, will join the University of Hawai'i football team as a student assistant.

UH coach June Jones said Gouveia, 37, is restricted from on-field coaching, but will be allowed to receive a tuition waiver, participate in strategy meetings with the Warrior coaches, and provide off-field instruction to the players.

Gouveia is expected to be promoted to graduate assistant after earning his bachelor's degree in the spring. Graduate assistants are allowed to coach on the field.

Jones said he wanted to help Gouveia earn a college degree. In return, Gouveia will offer input on strategy and coaching techniques.

"He's a great asset," Jones said.

Gouveia is the only player to have won an O'ahu Prep Bowl, NCAA national championship and Super Bowl.

Gouveia, who was the state's Player of the Year as a Wai'anae High senior in 1982, did not receive a scholarship offer from UH. Instead, Gouveia went to Brigham Young, where he was a safety on the Cougar team that won the national championship in 1984.

The Washington Redskins selected Gouveia in the eighth round of the 1986 NFL draft. With the Redskins, Gouveia, who moved to linebacker, won Super Bowl rings in 1988 and 1992.

Jones was Gouveia's head coach in 1998, when both were with the San Diego Chargers. After returning to the Redskins for a season, Gouveia retired two years ago and moved back to San Diego.

Jones also said All-Pro linebacker Bill Romanowski of the Oakland Raiders is training with the Warrior players. Romanowski, 36, who owns a home in Kahala, works out at UH's Waterhouse Training Facility.

"He's in great shape," Jones said. "He's probably in as good a shape as when he was 24."
