St. Christopher medals reappear

By Paula Rath
Advertiser Fashion Writer

Another '60s trend is back. In the days of the class of '65, it was cool for a guy to give his girl a St. Christopher medal to say "be safe" and "you're mine." It had nothing to do with being Catholic or a part of the surf culture.

In the summer of 2002, the medals are flying out the doors of Honolua Surf Co. shops, and the medal, which is said to offer protection, is considered a cool thing to wear — whether you surf or not.

St. Christopher medals come in two sizes, in either silver plate or sterling, with enamel. Colors include aqua, fuchsia, yellow, teal, white and smoke. Prices range from $15 to $51. No, it's not a boyfriend-girlfriend thing. People are mostly buying the medals for themselves.
