Waipahu Sugar Mill fire under control

The Waipahu Sugar Mill laboratory building caught fire earlier this evening. Firefighters had the blaze under control at 7:54 p.m.

Firefighters were battling a fire this evening at the Waipahu Sugar Mill and had the blaze under control at 7:54 p.m., the Honolulu Fire Department said.

HFD spokesman Capt. Richard Soo said firefighters responded to a 7:13 p.m. alarm.

The blaze was in an abandoned laboratory building on the sugar mill site.

Five engine companies and 35 firefighters were fighting the fire, Soo said.

Flames were visible from the H-1 Freeway.
