Tonight's Must-See

"Mystery: Murder Rooms: The Patient's Eyes," 9 p.m., PBS. Here's the first of four mystery movies with a fresh premise. Arthur Conan Doyle, we're told, used his real-life mentor (Dr. Joseph Bell) as the model for Sherlock Holmes. So now we imagine that Doyle is a young doctor, watching Bell solve murders. This opener is deep and dark: A young woman (layed by Katie Blake) has already suffered the murder of both parents. Now she says a hooded cyclist is pursuing her. Bell (played by Ian Richardson) probes the case while Doyle (Charles Edwards) falls in love with the woman. There are huge twists and turns, but the story has been skillfully filmed and acted. It's a murky but interesting ride.

Of Note

"M. Night Shyamalan's Signs of Fear," 7 p.m., ABC. Shyamalan was the brilliant writer-director of "The Sixth Sense." Now comes this film, which doubles as a promo for his new movie "Signs" and part two of "The Shining," which airs at 8 p.m. This hour looks at things we fear; it goes against NBC's "Fear Factor," making us think that everyone is out to scare us.

"Meet My Folks" premiere, 9 p.m., NBC. Wouldn't you hate to have your parents choose your dates? That's what happens in this series. In the opener, three guys — a boxer, a student and someone working in the family construction business — compete for a couple's approval to take their daughter to Hawai'i.
