Motorcyclist killed on H-1

A young man was killed last night in a motorcycle accident on H-1 Freeway.

Police, fire and ambulance were called at about 8:30 p.m. after motorists reported seeing a man lying unconscious in the eastbound lanes near Aloha Stadium and a motorcycle on the ground about 100 yards away.

The man, who was in his 20s, had multiple injuries and had lost both legs in the accident.

Emergency Medical Services District Chief Robert Pedro said EMS treated the man for trauma and took him by ambulance to The Queen's Medical Center.

He was declared dead a short time later.

Authorities said he was wearing a helmet when he was found on the highway.

Hilo vice officers uprooted 9,283 marijuana plants, from seedlings to 8 feet tall, during a five-day eradication effort last week.

The project concentrated on East Hawai'i, especially the Puna, Hilo, North Hilo and Hamakua Districts, police said.

The confiscated marijuana was growing in 609 separate plots.

Last month, vice officers destroyed 14,425 marijuana plants during a five-day eradication effort that ended on June 28.
