Outrigger finishes on top

By Dayton Morinaga
Advertiser Staff Writer

Consistency and the Outrigger Canoe Club have been synonymous this season.

As a result, Outrigger and championships remained synonymous as well yesterday.

Outrigger added to its impressive collection of trophies by winning the O'ahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association (OHCRA) Championship Regatta for the second consecutive year yesterday at Ke'ehi Lagoon.

Outrigger scored 75 points in 36 races for its 14th OHCRA title since 1985.

Hui Nalu placed second with 66, followed by Hui Lanakila (57), Kailua (56) and Lanikai (55).

"This one is sweet, real sweet," said Outrigger head coach Mike Mason. "We improved so much during the year, and this truly was a team championship. So many paddlers contributed."

Indeed, Outrigger won seven races yesterday, and scored points in 20 others (only the top four crews in each race score points).

Entering the Aug. 3 state championship regatta at Hilo Bay, Outrigger has won four consecutive OHCRA regattas.

"That's a surprise to me," Mason said. "The competition in OHCRA has been so tough this year. For us to come out and finish the year like this was very satisfying."

The Outrigger youth crews were particularly impressive yesterday, winning four races (girls 15-and-younger, boys 15-and-younger, boys 16-and-younger and boys 18-and-younger).

In the 13 youth races, Outrigger scored 38 points to build a lead it would never relinquish. No other club scored more than 26 points in the youth races.

"Our kids came through huge," Mason said. "That was our strength today, no doubt about it."

Outrigger's other race victories came in the women's 55-and-older, mixed (three men/three women) 40-and-older, and mixed open divisions.

"We didn't win that many (adult) races, so it might not seem like we're winning," Mason noted. "But we score points along the way by getting seconds and thirds and fourths. Consistency is our key because all those points add up."

Hui Nalu came up short behind Outrigger despite a fantastic performance from its open women.

Hui Nalu's women won the freshman, sophomore, junior and senior races, and placed third in the open-4 race. Out of a possible 25 points, the Hui Nalu open women scored 22.

The crew of Kelly Allen, Catherine Fuller, Gail Kaaialii, Tammy Kaneaiakala, Julie Aio and Kaui Pelekane won both the sophomore and senior races. In the prestigious senior race, they beat Outrigger's crew by 10 seconds.

"Those six are a good combination for us," said Steve Scott, the Hui Nalu women's coach. "But we're fortunate to have good depth this year, so we're still able to put good crews together in the other races as well."

Hui Nalu got as close as one point (59-58) behind Outrigger in the overall standings after the open women's races were completed. However, Outrigger pulled away down the stretch with a solid performance from its masters (ages 35 and older) crews.

The Kailua Canoe Club's freshman men's crew finished first in its race at the OHCRA Championship Regatta.

"I thought I had a plan to counter Outrigger at the end, but what looks good on paper doesn't always turn out good on the water," said Hui Nalu head coach Darryl Hara. "But no regrets. We lost by nine points, and that's not too bad."

Hui Nalu and Hui Lanakila matched Outrigger with seven race victories each.

Hui Lanakila had a strong showing in the men's races, winning the novice B, novice A and sophomore races, while placing second in the freshman and senior races. What's more, a victory by its men's 35-and-older crew in the final race of the day pushed Hui Lanakila into third place overall.

"Our men carry us," said Hui Lanakila head coach Leighton Look. "We were hoping to do better (overall) but considering the competition, third place is nice."

Healani Canoe Club placed sixth overall, but won the men's senior race — considered the top division in regattas.

The crew of Kea Pa'iaina, Bill Pratt, Andy Penny, Maui Kjeldsen, Kai Ahsam and Tad Yamashita completed the 1 1/2-mile course in 10 minutes, 44.46 seconds. Hui Lanakila was two seconds behind.

"Last week, they got us by two seconds, so we got them back," Pa'iaina said. "It was just a battle the whole way. It's a good thing we got the lead early because they were right on our okoles at the end."

Keahiakahoe won five races, including four youth races, to win the A division for smaller clubs with 31 points.

Waikiki Surf Club scored just 13 points, but its girls 18-and-younger crew capped an undefeated season with a 10-second victory over Outrigger.

Only two other crews went undefeated in OHCRA this year: Hui Lanakila's novice B men, and Hui Nalu's sophomore women.

Yesterday's regatta was the last chance for OHCRA crews to qualify for the Aug. 3 state championships. The top four crews in each division (based on points accumulated throughout the season) received bids to the state meet.

• Maui: Hawaiian Canoe Club, the defending state regatta champion, continued its dominance of the Maui County Hawaiian Canoe Association with an overwhelming victory in the championship regatta on Saturday at Kahului Harbor.

Hawaiian won 20 races in amassing 148 points to win its 18th consecutive Maui title. Equally impressive — and important — Hawaiian qualified 34 of its crews for the 37-race state championship regatta. No O'ahu club is expected to field more than 30.

Kihei placed second in the Maui championships with 75 points, followed by Kahana with 56.

• Big Island: Kai 'Opua capped an undefeated season with a victory in the Moku O Hawai'i Championship Regatta last week at Hilo Bay.

Kai 'Opua won 13 races and finished with 164 points. Kawaihae was second with 144, and Puna third with 135.
