Man dies in Big Island crash

A 50-year-old man was killed this morning on the Big Island when the all-terrain vehicle he was driving collided with another vehicle headed north near the Hualalai resorts.

Fire crews were called to assist with the accident at 5:23 a.m. on Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway at the Kaupulehu Road intersection. Fire officials said the vehicle was crossing the highway without lights and was struck by a car in the highway's northbound lane.

The driver of the other vehicle was taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital. Hospital staff could not confirm whether that patient was admitted or released following treatment.

Confrontation leads to arrest

A 47-year-old Waikiki man was arrested today after a confrontation with a male tourist ended with the visitor being slashed with a knife.

Waikiki police said the incident began at about 1:15 a.m. on the beach fronting the Hilton Hawaiian Village. The tourist, a 23-year-old man from California, told police the man had been bothering a relative when he intervened.

In the confrontation that followed, the suspect allegedly pulled a knife and slashed the victim on his left arm. The victim was taken to Straub Hospital where he was treated and released, a hospital spokesperson said.

The suspect was arrested at 1:45 a.m. at 2005 Kalia Road.

Knife-wielding man steals car

Police are seeking an armed robber wearing a black shirt and shorts who stole a car at knifepoint in Makiki this morning.

Officers were called shortly after 8 a.m. to the scene on Green Street where the 21-year-old victim said he was sleeping in his car. The victim said he awoke to find the robber holding a knife to his stomach and demanding that he get out of the car.

The man fled in the car, a 1994 Honda Civic, on Ward Avenue, toward Prospect Street. Police put out an all-points bulletin to aid the search for the robber.

Officer faces abuse, kidnap charges

A 37-year-old police officer remained in the cell block this morning pending charges of abuse and kidnapping following a domestic argument that culminated in a police barricade outside his Waipi'o townhouse yesterday.

His girlfriend, 48-year-old Luana Jean Bonnie Mangca, was charged with abuse and a traffic violation at the Pearl City police station yesterday. She was released after paying aggregate bail of $1,250.

Sailboat aids in near-drowning episode

The crew of a sailboat spotted a woman floating in waters off Makaha Beach after 10 this morning.

The woman was brought to shore, where fire rescue crews, lifeguards and the Emergency Medical Services paramedics worked to revive her, said Donald Gates EMS assistant chief of operations.

She was taken in critical condition to the Wai'anae Coast Comprehensive Health Center, Gates said.
