Hawai'i martial artists bring home gold medals

Athletes from Hawai'i's Japan International Karate-ki Center and Hawai'i Okinawan Kenpo Karate combined for 25 gold medals at the USA National Karate-do Federation Championships last weekend in Norfolk, Va.

Ty Nakamoto won three gold medals in the 8-year-old division for kata, kumite and kobudo. Aaron Oandasan of Mililani won a gold medal in the men's kata division and was selected to represent the United States at the Pan American World Championships in September.

Other gold medal winners from Hawai'i: Susan Baumann, Keanu Chee, Lauren Fayloga, Millie Ann Jovenal, Jarvis Losbog, Patrick Martin, Howard Takahashi, Rebecca Takahashi, Ashley Turner, Ryan Weinmann, Wesley Yoshikawa, Maria Ocampo, Bradley Nishibata, Brooke Yorita and Randall Ganigan.


BASEBALL

• Mililani wins crown: Mililani won the Hawai'i Pony Tournament, defeating Wai'anae, 14-2, Monday night at Pilia'au Community Park in Wai'anae.

Mililani's Chaz Miyashiro had a homer and double, and Jared Lum chipped in with two doubles

The 13- to 14-year-olds will travel to Fullerton, Calif., Aug. 10-15 for the Pony West Zone Tournament.

• 'Aiea-Kaimuki on the way: The 'Aiea-Kaimuki Big League All-Star team (17- to 18-year-olds), which won the Hawai'i State Tournament last weekend in Hilo, open play today in the Western Regional Tournament in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The regional lasts until Aug. 1, with the winner advancing to the World Series Aug. 3-10 at Easley, S.C. Team members include Roosevelt's Chris Mols and Corey Higa, St. Louis' Kaimi Mead and Moanalua's Geoffrey Say and James Strombach.

• Speed clinic for coaches: The Rich Miano Speed and Quickness Clinic for coaches will be tomorrow from 7-9 p.m. at the University of Hawai'i athletic auditorium adjacent to Cooke Field. The clinic is free and open to all coaches.
