Alleged plan to rob bank foiled

FBI and Honolulu detectives arrested a 47-year-old man outside the Bishop Square branch of American Savings Bank yesterday, after he tipped off authorities that he planned to rob the bank.

The man contacted the FBI and told them of his plan, including the date, time and bank location, 180 S. King St., said FBI spokesman Kevin Rickett.

Federal agents waited for the man at the bank, and on his arrival at 9:30 a.m., he was arrested on suspicion of second-degree attempted robbery.

"He never made it inside the bank," Rickett said. "As soon as he touched the door, we arrested him."

Woman in hospital after accident

A 30-year-old woman was in fair condition at the hospital this morning after the car she was driving plunged into Kahana Bay last night.

The accident occurred about 9:30 p.m. on Kamehameha Highway, about a quarter-mile north of Kahana Bay Beach Park, firefighters said. She was flown by helicopter to The Queen's Medical Center.

The Ford Explorer was traveling toward Kane'ohe and may have been speeding before it plunged into the water, firefighters said.

Firefighters said a woman called to report that her two sons dashed into the water to try to help the driver, who was the only person in the car.

Crash victim was Hamakua resident

Big Island police have identified a security guard killed when his all-terrain vehicle collided with a car.

Andy Pascubillo, 52, of Hamakua, was killed in the accident about 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Pascubillo was riding the ATV across Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway at the entrance to the Four Seasons Resort when the ATV collided with the car, police said.

The driver of the car, 21-year-old Eric Aoki of Kealakekua, suffered minor injuries, police said.

Tractor driver dies from injuries

A 62-year-old Waialua man died yesterday at The Queen's Medical Center of injuries suffered last week when he was thrown from his Ford farm tractor in a traffic accident.

His identity was not available today from the city Office of the Medical Examiner.

The accident happened shortly before 9 p.m. last Friday on Farrington Highway when the eastbound tractor driver attempted to turn left at Ku Place and was struck by a westbound white 1989 Chevrolet driven by a 19-year-old man, also from Waialua. The car driver was uninjured.
