THE LEFT LANE
Back on charts

Iz is at it again. The late Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's "Alone in IZ World" and "Facing Future," both featuring his version of "Over the Rainbow," have resurfaced on Billboard Magazine's album charts, claiming five spots in the July 27 issue.

"Alone" re-enters the Billboard 200 at No. 173; it also remains No. 1 on the Top World Albums chart, where it has nestled for 42 consecutive weeks. It is No. 13 (and a "Greatest Gainer" winner) on the top Independent Albums chart, and No. 15 on the Top Internet Album Sales chart, where it makes its debut this week.

"Future" may also have a long-lived future on the Top Pop Catalog chart, where it debuts at No. 25.

Billy Bob boo-boo?

JOLIE
Note to Angelina Jolie: A diamond is forever, sweetie, but a tattoo? Last week's news that Jolie and her husband, serial groom Billy Bob Thornton (who has been married five times), are headed for splitsville brought up the question of her tattoo. We're talking about the giant "Billy Bob" over a hissing dragon that takes up visible and important acreage on the Academy Award-winner's left arm. What will she do with the tattoo?

Unlike Johnny Depp's tattoo (when the actor broke off his engagement to Winona Ryder, he had his arm tattoo altered from "Winona Forever" to "Wino Forever"), altering the words Billy Bob won't be easy. Jolie has three options: lasers (scarring is a risk); chemical peels to remove the top layer of skin (ouch!) or surgical removal (works best for small tattoos). Who's sorry now?

Recording with a pro

Dave Tucciarone, a four-time Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner and a 35-year music veteran, is giving a 10-week music recording workshop beginning Aug. 3.

Sessions are intended to introduce would-be recording stars and technicians 13 and older to the recording process, including engineering, sequencing, producing, composing, arranging and mixing.

The sessions will run through Oct. 5 and will be conducted at a commercial recording studio and will include hands-on learning. Class size is limited and the deadline to sign up is today. Information: 372-7836.

Host pool shrinking

GUMBEL
Two months after Bryant Gumbel exited as host of "The Early Show," CBS still hasn't named a successor. But the pool of potential replacements has gotten smaller. Russ Mitchell, host of CBS' Saturday morning news show, has been given a new job on "CBS News Sunday Morning," so he's out of the running.

CBS has tested various hosts, including "Hollywood Squares" host Tom Bergeron, chief White House correspondent John Roberts, and former "Today" co-host Deborah Norville, but hasn't settled on anyone.
