Woman in hospital after accident
A 30-year-old woman was flown by helicopter to The Queen's Medical Center in serious condition last night after the car she was driving plunged into Kahana Bay, officials said.
The accident occurred about 9:30 p.m. on Kamehameha Highway, about a quarter-mile north of Kahana Bay Beach Park, firefighters said.
The Ford Explorer was traveling toward Kane'ohe and may have been speeding before it plunged into the water, firefighters said. There is no guardrail in the area and the car went down a small embankment.
Firefighters said a woman called to report that her two sons dashed into the water to try to help the driver, who was the only person in the car.
Hamakua resident was crash victim
Big Island police have identified a security guard killed when his all-terrain vehicle collided with a car.
Andy Pascubillo, 52, of Hamakua, was killed in the accident about 5 a.m. Wednesday.
Pascubillo was riding the ATV across Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway at the entrance to the Four Seasons Resort when the ATV collided with the car, police said.
The driver of the car, 21-year-old Eric Aoki of Kealakekua, suffered minor injuries and was treated and released from North Hawai'i Community Hospital, police said.
It was the 15th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year.
Firefighters airlift injured hiker
Kaua'i firefighters yesterday airlifted a tourist who had injured her ankle on the Kalalau Trail and couldn't walk out.
The rescue happened about 4 p.m., roughly five miles into the trail, said county Battalion Chief Ernest Moniz.
The Kansas woman was placed in a basket, hoisted out by the helicopter and taken by ambulance to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, Moniz said.
