Stubblefield, Feldmann capture match play

Andrew Feldmann and Larry Stubblefield defeated Brian Sasada and Kirk Nelson, 3 and 2, to win the Golf Concepts Four Ball Match Play Championship at O'ahu Country Club yesterday.

Feldmann and Stubblefield took a two-stroke advantage on the front nine when Feldmann birdied the par-5 sixth hole and Stubblefield birdied the par-3 seventh hole. Stubblefield also got a birdie on the 10th hole for a three-stroke advantage.

Earlier in the semifinals, Feldmann and Stubblefield defeated Kevin Hayashi and Rodney Acia 1-up on the 19th hole and Sasada and Nelson defeated David Ishii and David Chin 1-up.

VOLLEYBALL

U.S. loses to Cuba: Cuba defeated the United States women's national team 28-26, 18-25, 25-20, 19-25, 15-11 in the FIVB World Grand Prix in Taipei last night, despite an 18-point performance by the USA's Heather Bown.

Bown, a former University of Hawai'i player, had 10 kills and match-high eight blocks.

The U.S. is tied for fourth in the Grand Prix pool play standings with a 3-4 record. China and Russia are at 6-1, followed by Brazil at 5-2. The top three and host China advance to the championship round.

"We blocked and hit well, but Cuba went out there and served tough and got lucky," said USA setter and captain Robyn Ah Mow, another former UH player.

Iolani Invitational: Twenty varsity girls teams from Hawai'i and California are expected to compete in the 20th annual Iolani Invitational Tournament Aug. 14-17 at Iolani School.

A total of 72 matches will be played in four days with matches starting at 9:45 a.m. and finishing at about 9 p.m. each day.

Entries from California include two-time defending champion Harvard-Westlake.

Hawai'i teams include defending state champion Iolani, runner-up Punahou, St. Joseph, Seabury Hall, Hilo, Kamehameha, Hawai'i Baptist, Kalani, Kahuku, Moanalua, McKinley, Kaimuki and Mililani.

Admission is $4 for adults and $1 for students (K-12), with three- and four-day passes available ($10, $12).

YOUTH BASEBALL

Little League Big League: Hawai'i ('Aiea-Kaimuki) is 1-1 after the first two days of a regional tournament at Scottsdale, Ariz.

Hawai'i beat host Arizona 17-3 on Thursday and lost 6-5 to Southern California yesterday.

In the first game, Justin Pate was 3-for-5 with two doubles and 3 RBIs and Geoff Say was 2-for-3, including a double and four RBIs.

In yesterday's game, Southern California scored a run in the bottom of the eight for the victory. Tyler McCready and Trenton Teruya each had two hits for Hawai'i.

Hawai'i faces Northern California in pool play today.

Babe Ruth 13-under: Channon Coloma pitched a two-hitter and had three hits and two RBIs to lift Hawai'i to a 7-1 victory over Nevada (South Reno) on Thursday in the opener of a regional at Napa, Calif.

WRESTLING

Going for title: Ashley Gaspar, a May graduate of Nanakuli High School, will wrestle for the 165-pound championship of USA Wrestling's Junior Nationals today at Fargo, N.D.

Gaspar swept through preliminary matches yesterday. Danyelle Hedin of Kailua High lost once yesterday and will wrestle for third place today in the 119-pound division.

Jared Wakayama, Iolani 125-pounder, was the only boy from Hawai 'i who was not eliminated from freestyle competition yesterday.
