'Chicago' tryouts slated at DHT

Diamond Head Theatre is holding auditions for "Chicago," a Tony Award-winning musical that will be the 2002-2003 season's opener this fall.

Tryouts will be 2 p.m. today at DHT's rehearsal hall.

The show will run Sept. 27 to Oct. 13, under the direction of Andrew Sakaguchi, who also will choreograph. Mary Chesnut Hicks will be musical director.

The show is the longest-running revival on Broadway, where it won six Tonys in 1997. Set in the roaring '20s, it tells the story of a murderous Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly.

Auditioners should be prepared to sing in the style of the show; an accompanist will be provided and karaoke or a cappella singing will not be allowed. Scripts are available for perusal at the DHT offices.

Church lu'au on Saturday

Lili'iuokalani Protestant Church, at 66-090 Kamehameha Highway, will hold its annual lu'au Saturday, with both on-site dining and take-out service.

Serving time will be 1 to 4 p.m.; take-out service will be 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event coincides with the 91st birthday celebration of kahu Sam Saffrey.

Harry B. Soria Jr. will emcee an entertainment program featuring the Lili'uokalani Choir, led by Eileen Hirota; Joe Wilcox and Makaloa, Genoa Keawe, Van Diamond, Nalani Olds and the Hawaiian Music Hall of Famers, including Mickey Bowers, Kealoha Kalama and Gary Aiko.

Benefit honors first Miss Hawai'i

Former Miss Hawai'i winners will honor the memory of one of their own, the first Miss Hawai'i, Yun Tau Zane, in a fund-raising program from 6 p.m. Aug. 7 at the Honolulu Country Club, 1690 Ala Pu'umalu St.

Billie Takaki (Miss Hawai'i 2000) and Cathy Foy Mahi (Miss Hawai'i 1975) are organizing the scholarship benefit, with proceeds earmarked for future contestants.

No-host cocktails will be from 6 p.m. A program hosted by Brickwood Galuteria follows at 7 p.m.
