How did Sept. 11 change your view of the U.S., world?

Advertiser Staff

As we approach Sept. 11, many people will be reflecting on how their lives have changed since the terrorist attacks. The Advertiser would like to share your thoughts with other readers. More specifically, we'd like to know your answers to any or all of these questions:

1. For many, the attacks caused profound loss — of loved ones or of a sense of stability and order in their lives. Others lost jobs in the economic fallout. Some people say they're spending more time with friends and family or redefining their priorities. Some find that minor routines, such as going to the airport, are different but that overall their lives have changed very little. How has your life changed?

2. Since Sept. 11, the U.S. government has tightened security procedures and increased monitoring of both citizens and noncitizens. Some people see these things as a small price to pay if the nation can be protected from further attack. Others fear they are eroding the civil liberties that help define this country. What do you think?

3. Have the events of Sept. 11 and beyond changed your view of the United States and its role in the world? Have you felt the need to learn more, or teach your children more, about parts of the world you knew little about before the attacks?

4. Many people compared the Sept. 11 attacks to the attack on Pearl Harbor. After a year of reflection, how would you compare Sept. 11 to the other defining world events of your lifetime? What do you imagine telling future generations about it and how it affected you?

We'd appreciate hearing from you by Aug. 9. Mail submissions to Sept. 11 Project, The Honolulu Advertiser, P.O. Box 3110, Honolulu HI 96802 or via e-mail at sept11@honoluluadvertiser.com. Please include your full name and both daytime and evening telephone numbers. Any material submitted may be published or distributed in print, electronic and other forms.
