College paper recognized

Chaminade University of Honolulu's student publication, "Silversword News Magazine," recently won first place with special merit from the American Scholastic Press Association for its outstanding content and design. Seventeen communication students from the fall 2001 and spring 2002 staff were recognized. It is Silversword's first award.


UH zoologist receives grant

The National Sea Grant Office has awarded the Knauss Fellowship to Malia Ana Rivera, a native of Kane'ohe and graduate of the University of Hawai'i at Manoa in zoology. A doctoral candidate at the University of California, Berkeley, she is an analytical research specialist at the Hawai'i Institute of Marine Biology on Coconut Island.

Rivera said she planned to work on Pacific fisheries issues.


Administrator wins Fulbright

Linda Duckworth, director of International Student Services at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, was one of six individuals chosen nationwide for a Fulbright grant to participate in a special program for international education administrators in Japan. She participated in a group program that introduced higher education and culture in Japan.

The following scholarships have been awarded:

  • Burger King/McLamore Foundation: Ryan Rubianes, Damien Memorial High; Shannon Riley, Maryknoll High; Roy Alan Goo, Punahou School; Sheila Mae Valdez, Kaua'i High; Stacey Okawa, Mililani High; Allison Pagampao, Baldwin High.
  • 2002 National Coca-Cola Scholars: Brennan Takayama, Waikea High and Emma Yuen, Hilo High. Each received $20,000.
  • 2001 Hawaii Venture Capital Deal of the Year Scholarship, Kurt Nakamura, Hilo High, sponsored by Junior Achievement of Hawaii.
  • USA Funds, Wahiawa's Bo Kim, Leilehua High and Wai'anae's Nicole "Maile" Kalama, Waianae High.
  • St. Andrew's Priory School students Katie Omura, Ella Soto-Edwards, Leslie Ann Wong, Kim Hirota, Randi Anne Miura, Tara Guillozet, Krystle Osaki, Yu-Tzu (Debbie) Li and Darene Matsuoka received awards at the school's commencement exercises.
  • The 2002 Senator David Y. Ige Scholarship: Lana Yozo of Aiea High and Kevin Tashima of Pearl City High. Yozo plans to study business management at the University of San Francisco and Tashima will pursue science at Oregon State University.
