Pros featured at basketball camp

NBA stars Gary Payton, Eddie Jones and Sam Cassell are scheduled to be guest speakers at the Give-n-Go Basketball Camp 2002, Aug. 14-17, at the Hemmeter Fieldhouse on the Punahou School campus.

The camp, for boys and girls ages 8 to 17, will run in half-day sessions.

The morning session (8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) will be for ages 8 to 12. The afternoon session (11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.) will be for those 13 to 17.

The camp will focus on the fundamentals of passing, dribbling, shooting and defense from coaches and skilled counselors from the high school and college levels.

Assisting in the camp will be Glen Graham, shooting coach of Jason Kidd, Bobby Jackson and Mitch Richmond. Also assisting will be former Punahou coach Alan Lum.

High school camp counselors include basketball players Rachel Kane, Elyse Umeda and Shanna-Lei Dacanay of Punahou, Tiffany Shim of Kamehameha, and Patti Hardimon of Moanalua. Others include Punahou athletes Todd LaFountaine and Richard Kim, a first-team basketball all-star in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu two seasons ago.

Nainoa Thompson, Pal Eldredge and Chris McLachlin are among other speakers.

The camp costs $150 and includes a camp T-shirt, certificate, gym bag and mini basketball.

The camp will help benefit the Boys & Girls Club, Bishop Estate, Lanakila PAL, Hawai'i Foodbank, American Heart Association and Punahou's Center for Public Service.
