Search resumes for kayaker

Advertiser Staff

The Coast Guard resumed a search today for a man who called Big Island firefighters and told them he was in a kayak 10 miles off Mahukona Harbor and taking on water.

Firefighters said reception of the call, which the man made from his cell phone at 12:45 p.m., was bad, Coast Guard Petty Officer Lauren Smith said.

Smith said a state boat, along with a Coast Guard plane and helicopter, searched yesterday. The Coast Guard craft and a Navy plane resumed the search this morning.

As darkness fell, the man, who identified himself as John Stockton, said he spotted the plane searching for him. The cell phone lost battery power last night, officials said. The crew used night vision goggles in the search.
