The state Department of Health has issued a warning to residents to employ rodent-control measures around their homes and workplaces, a warning that comes in the wake of an increase in field mice on Maui and an associated spike in murine typhus cases.Recent mice trappings on Maui and Hawai'i conducted by the department have indicated a four-fold increase in the rodent population. The areas most affected include parts of Kihei, Kula and the grassy former canefields outside Lahaina, officials said.
On the Big Island, the state identified Waikoloa, Kawaihae and south Kona among the trouble spots, while on Kaua'i, the problems were noted especially in farm lots and residential areas of Waimea.
Residents were advised to keep a clean home, especially kitchen areas, to avoid attracting rodents. Food sources should be removed: Garbage cans should be lidded tightly, and uneaten food should be discarded. Other potential food sources for rodents include bird feeders and fallen fruits and nuts from trees outside.
Spring-loaded or glue-type rodent traps, baited with food eaten by the mice in the home, should be set near baseboards. This works better than poisoning, which causes odor problems from dead mice decaying in inaccessible areas.
Outdoors, use mechanical traps and seal entry points a quarter-inch wide or wider. Brush and other potential nesting materials should be cleared from around the house foundation.
