Missing diver's body recovered

KIHEI, Maui A diver is believed to have drowned early this morning off Mai Poina 'Oe Ia'u Beach Park in Kihei.

The body of Emiliano Fametau, 48, of Kihei, was recovered after his diving partner reported him missing at 1:10 a.m., said Lt. Glenn Cuomo of the Maui Police Department.

The Department of Fire Control helped with the recovery of the body, which was found at 3:15 a.m., about 100 yards offshore, said the department's Assistant Chief Greg Chong Kee.

Cuomo said an autopsy will be done to confirm the cause of death.

Power goes out in parts of Kailua

Three downed utility poles are being blamed for a power failure that left about 1,200 customers in the dark last night in Kailua.

The failure was reported at 7:54 p.m. and affected customers along Kailua Road and Hamakua Drive, said Hawaiian Electric spokesman Fred Kobashikawa. Work crews said a guy wire that held up an electricity pole on Kailua Road failed and the pole broke. Two other utility poles also were brought to the ground.

Power to all 1,200 customers wasn't restored until 10:25 p.m. yesterday. The downed pole and wires forced police to close Kailua Road and Hamakua Drive until about 5:30 this morning.
