Sewage spills in Ke'ehi Lagoon

A 36-inch sewer main from the Kamehameha Highway wastewater pump station ruptured, causing raw sew-age to spill into Ke'ehi Lagoon last night. Officials were notified at 6:15 p.m. of the spill near 2685 N. Nimitz Highway.

The spill was halted at approximately 8 p.m. An estimated 330,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled from the break. About 150,000 gallons entered the lagoon. An assessment of damage will be made today. Warning signs were posted and water is being tested.

Actor Bumatai has brain tumor

After seeking emergency medical treatment Sunday night, actor Ray Bumatai, who was playing Daddy Lusa in Diamond Head Theatre's musical, "You Somebody," was scheduled for surgery to remove a brain tumor last night at Straub Hospital.

Bumatai, seen on local TV playing the Chicken Ranger on KFC commercials, is a theatrical and film industry veteran who has done on-camera and voice work for several projects, including the Disney film "Lilo & Stitch," and for four years has provided the voice of Tito on Nickelodeon's "Rocket Power" show.

He missed Sunday's matinee performance, after having difficulty getting through his performance Saturday night, said John Rampage, DHT artistic director.

Bumatai was taken to Straub's emergency room Sunday by his wife, Karen.

Wil Kahele will take over Bumatai's role.

Power failure hits parts of Kailua

Three downed utility poles are being blamed for a power failure that left about 1,200 customers in the dark last night in Kailua.

The failure was reported at 7:54 p.m. and affected customers along Kailua Road and Hamakua Drive, said Hawaiian Electric spokesman Fred Kobashikawa. Work crews said a guy wire that held up an electricity pole on Kailua Road failed and the pole broke. Two other utility poles also were brought to the ground.

Police closed Kailua Road and Hamakua Drive for several hours. Power was not restored to all customers until 10:25 p.m.

New UH campus on board agenda

University of Hawai'i officials will speak tomorrow before the Makakilo-Kapolei-Honokai Hale Neighborhood Board on its proposed West O'ahu university campus.

The meeting is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Campbell Estate Building's Laulima Room, 1001 Kamokila Blvd.

UH officials are considering three possible sites for the campus: a 320-acre location east of Kapolei Golf Course next to H-1 Freeway, a 59-acre site next to Kapolei Middle School in the Villages of Kapolei residential subdivision, and a 27-acre location in downtown Kapolei.

The four-year undergraduate campus would ultimately accommodate 6,500 to 7,500 students. A recommendation will be made to the UH Board of Regents in September.

Myron Tong and Ron Lee from St. Francis-West Medical Center are also scheduled to make a separate presentation.
