Wie will play in 3rd LPGA tourney

Advertiser Staff and Wire Reports

WIE
It only seemed appropriate that 12-year-old Michelle Wie of Honolulu will be playing in a golf tournament called the Wendy's Championship for Children in Dublin, Ohio, starting Friday.

The only thing is the tournament is part of the LPGA Tour.

Wie, a Punahou School student, shot a 1-under-71 at Tartan Fields Golf Club and was the medalist in qualifying yesterday. She was one of two golfers who qualified for the first round.

This is the third LPGA tournament for Wie, who was a Monday qualifier for the season-opening Takefuji Classic at Waikoloa on the Big Island. She also received a sponsor's exemption at the Asahi Ryokuten International Championship at North Augusta, S.C. She did not make the cut in both tournaments.

"This time, I just want to make the cut," Wie told the Associated Press in a telephone interview from Ohio.

Yesterday, Wie's round included an eagle on the par-4 11th hole. She hit a 280-yard drive, then lobbed in from 77 yards. She got as low as 4-under, but her round also included a bogey on the par-3 17th.

Wie has had a busy summer, including finishing tied for seventh at the Westfield (Ohio) Junior PGA Championship on July 20. She became the youngest semifinalist in the history of any women's amateur championship conducted by the United States Golf Association at the USGA Women's Amateur Public Links. She lost to Hwanhee Lee in the semifinals on June 22.

Wie lost in the first round of match play in the U.S. Girls' Junior Championship in Westfield last week.

"It's more tiring than I thought it would be," said Wie, who has spent the last 1 1/2 months on the Mainland.
