CyberCom to lay off 19 staffers

Advertiser Staff

Peter Kay, the president of CyberCom Inc. and an internet and radio personality, will lay off his remaining 19 employees at the end of August as the company gets out of the Web design business, Kay said today.

CyberCom had focused on Web and software development and generated $2.4 million in business last year with 25 employees. For the past several years, the company has had annual sales growth, Kay said.

But the growth rate slowed dramatically, and CyberCom will now get out of the design, programming and web hosting business. Its hosting business will be transferred to Century Computers.

Many CyberCom employees have already gotten jobs at some of the company's clients, which include Bank of Hawaii, Outrigger Hotels, the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau and News-week International, Kay said.

But CyberCom will continue in some as yet undetermined direction, said Kay, the company's president. Kay plans to continue his radio spot, "Your Computer Minute with Peter Kay" and his radio show, "Your Computer Hour."

He is also considering focusing on management and business consulting and being more involved with the media.

"Right now, we're just too focused on this transition," said Kay, 39. "My primary focus is on the task at hand. Then I'll take a step back, survey what's going on and figure out what to do next. We will be in Hawai'i for our life time."

Kay said he wants to avoid the mistakes of other technology companies, which have failed.

"We're here to set an example for change," Kay said. "I want to do things the professional way and the honorable way."

CyberCom will continue under its corporate ownership in its downtown offices, Kay said.
