Retired teacher a top volunteer

Hazel Kauahikaua, a member of the O'ahu Retired Teachers Association, was named 2002 Outstanding Female Volunteer at the Mayor's 36th Annual Senior Recognition Program recently.

The retired teachers elected officers for 2002-2003: president, Edna Fujiwara; vice president, Loy Fook Leu; recording secretary, Lenora Leu; assistant recording secretary, Patricia Lau; corresponding secretary, Kay Ono; treasurer, Nellie Lum; and assistant treasurer, Alice Kealoha.

Members of the board of directors are Pearl Ching, Hazel Kauahikaua and Jane Pang. Past president is Dorothy Mau.


Onaka to lead national group

Alvin Onaka, state registrar and chief of the state Health Department's Office of Health Status Monitoring, was elected president of the National Association for Public Health Statistics and Information Systems at the organization's recent 69th annual meeting in Anchorage, Alaska.

Onaka said he plans to emphasize international cooperation in health and vital statistics, which will be the theme of the association's 2003 meeting in New York.

He will work with Canada, Mexico, the United Nations and the U.S. government to improve databases on vital statistics and other health information, including electronic registration of births and deaths.

Onaka also will try to bring the national association's 2004 meeting to Honolulu.


Mililani student chosen as page

Mililani High School student Leandra Wilson will serve as a U.S. House page in Washington during the 2002-03 school year. Her name was submitted to the House Democratic leadership by U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie.

Wilson, daughter of Richard and Kathy Wilson, was one of two Mililani High students who qualified for the Running Start Program, which allows them to take college-level courses for high school and college credit. She is a Senior Girl Scout who earned the Silver Award, the organization's second-highest award.

House pages work part-time as messengers in the Capitol complex, attend regular high-school classes and live in a dormitory.


Yim to head IHS board

The Institute of Human Services board elected the following officers: president, Patrick Yim; vice president, Cha Thompson; treasurer, Keith Steiner; and secretary, Sherman Hee.

New board members are: Edmond Aczon, Rebecca Dixon Bates, Dick Dubonoski, Kevin Gleason, Angela Hardy Isaac, Patsy Kirio, Alvin Sakamoto, Arun Savara, Ron Taketa and Laurence Vogel.


League inducts Zickefoose

The Assistance League of Hawaii recently inducted new officers: Darlene Zickefoose, president; Raynette Scruton, vice president; Connie Culbertson, recording secretary; Pat Sandborn, corresponding secretary; and Marti Frensley, treasurer.


Lions unit names officers

The Ala Moana Lions Club has selected officers for fiscal year 2002-03: president, Yoshi Ushijima; secretary, Clifford Wakatake; and treasurer, Wayne Karimoto.
