Waipi'o advances in Little League play

Joshua Sugitan and Kaimi Salandron each singled in runs and Samson Aina had a double in the sixth inning when Waipi'o scored all of its runs, with the help of three Washington errors.

Earlier in the day, Washington scored four runs in the top of the seventh and forced a winner-take-all final by defeating Waipi'o, 6-4.
Waipi'o advances to the Western Regionals in La Mirada, Calif., Aug. 3-9.
MORE YOUTH BASEBALL
Babe Ruth (13-under): Parker McCready pitched a three-hitter as Hawai'i beat Tri-Valley, Calif., 2-1, last night at the Babe Ruth (age 13-under) Regional Tournament at Napa, Calif.
Aaron Awa and Channon Coloma each batted 2-for-4 for Hawai'i, which advances to today's championship game against unbeaten El Segundo, Calif.
El Segundo beat Hawai'i, 8-1, Monday.
CABA (10-under): The Hawai'i Warriors lost two games at the Continental Amateur Baseball Association World Series (ages 10-under) Monday at Aurelia, Iowa.
Nebraska beat Hawai'i, 1-0, in the first game. The Warriors' Kyle Watase pitched a two-hitter.
In the second game, Ohio scored five runs in the top of the sixth to beat Hawai'i, 6-2. Hawai'i's Todd Nagamine batted 2-for-3 with a triple.
YOUTH SOFTBALL
ASA (10-under): Jamie Millwood singled home Kristi Oshiro as the Mililani Shockers beat the Texas Thunder, 1-0, yesterday in pool play at the 10-under Amateur Softball Association National Championships at Savage Park in Tulsa, Okla.
PADDLING
Five win 12 medals: Five paddlers from the Hawai'i Canoe and Kayak Team combined to win 12 medals at the 2002 USA Canoe and Kayak National Championships last week at Gainesville, Ga.
Chris Ball of Hawai'i Kai teamed with Brandon Woods of Kane'ohe to win the gold medal in the senior men's K2 (two-person kayak) 200-meter race, and a bronze in the K2 500-meter race.
Ball, who is also the coach of the Hawai'i team, also won silver medals in the K1 500-meter race and the K4 1,000-meter race. Woods, a 2002 Mid-Pacific graduate, added a silver medal in the K4 500-meter race.
Three Hawai'i females Lindsay Norcross, Mei Linn Park and Lindsay Wessberg joined a paddler from New York to win a gold medal in the junior women's K4 1,000-meter race, and a silver in the K4 500-meter race.
Norcross, a 2002 Iolani graduate, also won a silver medal in the junior women's K1 5,000-meter race and a bronze in the K1 1,000-meter race.
Park, a 2002 Kamehameha graduate, added a bronze medal in the K1 200-meter race.
Wessberg, a junior at Punahou, won bronze medals in the juvenile women's K2 1,000-meter and K1 5,000-meter races.
SURFING
Eight reach third round: Eight Hawai'i surfers advanced to the third round of the junior division of the U.S. Open of Surfing yesterday at Huntington Beach, Calif.
Kekoa Bacalso, Nathan Carroll, Dustin Cuizon, Daniel Jones, Benel Eleogram, Jordy Brough, T.J. Barron and Joel Centeio all advanced through yesterday's second round. The junior division is for surfers under the age of 21, professional or amateur.
Bacalso, Carroll, Cuizon, Jones and Hank Gaskell also advanced through the trial rounds of the men's pro division yesterday.
TENNIS
Kailua Doubles: Ikaika Jobe and Brad Lum-Tucker eliminated the seventh-seeded team of Chad Shibuya and Greg Takata, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4, last night in the Kailua Racquet Club's Men's Night Doubles Tennis Tournament.
Jobe and Lum-Tucker advanced to tonight's quarterfinals against the top-seeded team of Ryan Ideta and Erik Sandblom.
Ideta and Sandblom defeated Tyler Black and Matthew Chang, 6-3, 6-4.
SWIMMING
Afualo left off: Luteru "Ed" Afualo, a junior-to-be at Kapolei High School, received an honorable mention on the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association Public School All-American team.
Afualo was ranked 59th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 58.83 seconds, which he achieved in winning his second straight Hawai'i high school state championship.
His name was not included on a list of Hawai'i All-Americans at www.hawaiiswim.org that was published in yesterday's paper.
