Bring on those art-house movies

For such a cosmopolitan city, Honolulu is rather lacking in the alternative/bohemian department. So we're delighted that the Wallace Theatres at Restaurant Row will soon be devoting all nine screens to art-house movies and foreign films.

Later this month, Wallace Theatres will join with the Honolulu Academy of Arts to expand its offerings of indies, oldies, documentaries and foreign and ethnic films. It's a great niche, because when it comes to Hollywood blockbusters, there's no way they can compete with the nearby Ward Stadium 16.

Organizers also are considering upgrading the concessions to more classy snacks. If they can upgrade the worn and rather seedy lobby and screening rooms, all will be well.
