Blood bank to visit areas

The Blood Bank of Hawai'i will be collecting blood from donors throughout O'ahu this month.

Donors must be in good health, at least 18 years old, weigh 110 pounds or more, and provide a valid photo ID. For an appointment or more details, call the Blood Bank at 845-9966 or go online to www.bbh.org.

Where blood drives will be held:

  • La'ie Shopping Center — 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m. tomorrow.
  • Times Super Market in Kailua — 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday.
  • Times Super Market in Kane'ohe — 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. next Sunday.
  • Wal-Mart in Mililani — 10 a.m.-4 p.m. June 11.
  • Town Center of Mililani — 8 a.m.-3 p.m. June 15.
  • Kmart in Kapolei — 8 a.m.-3 p.m. June 22.
  • Kahala Mall — 9 a.m.-3 p.m. June 23.
  • Castle Medical Center — 7:30-11:30 a.m. June 28.
  • Wai'anae Mall — 9 a.m.-3 p.m. June 29.


Siren testing tomorrow

The state Civil Defense monthly test of sirens and the Emergency Alert System will be conducted at 11:45 a.m. tomorrow.

The attention/alert signal is a steady 45-second tone on all sirens. The signal is used to alert the public to any emergency that poses a threat to life and property.

When the signal is sounded, people should turn on their radios or televisions for information and instructions.

Civil Defense disaster preparedness information can be found in the front section of the white pages of phone directories for all counties.

Kahuku teacher national finalist

Lorey Ishihara, a Kahuku High School teacher, is one of eight finalists for a national history award.

The Richard T. Farrell Teacher of Merit Award is given to a teacher who employs innovative teaching methods in and out of the classroom.

Ishihara and the other finalists will be recognized at the National History Day contest next Sunday at the University of Maryland. The winner will be named June 13 at an awards ceremony.

Ishihara has participated in the Hawai'i History Day since 1993, engaging students in research.

The Hawai'i Council for the Humanities will send a 39-student delegation to the national contest.
