Suspect charged in store burglary

One of two men accused of breaking into a McCully liquor store last week was arraigned today on on charges of second-degree burglary, auto theft and two drug offenses.

A witness called police after watching two men breaking through the front door at Crown Liquor Store, 1865 S. King St. at 1:30 a.m. Friday.

One man ran away but the other, identified as David B. Akana, allegedly entered the store, emerged with cartons of cigarettes and drove away in a truck. Police pursued Akana, 36, and discovered the truck had been stolen.

Akana then fled on foot but was caught. He was charged Saturday, with bail set at $100,000, and made his first court appearance today.

Sketch released in jewelry theft

Police are distributing a composite sketch of a man sought in a May 21 Waikiki jewelry heist in the hope that someone will identify him.

KPolice have released this sketch in the search for a suspect in a Waikiki jewelry robbery.

Witnesses told police that a man in his late 20s approached the H. Royal Gem kiosk, 2201 Kalakaua Ave., at 10 p.m. said he was to be married and asked to see two diamond rings.

When the employee showed the rings, valued at $5,700, he allegedly grabbed them and ran, later pointing a handgun at the security guard who caught him and striking the guard in the face with the butt of the gun.

The man being sought is described as 5 feet 8 to 5 feet 10 inches tall with a medium build, black hair and tan complexion. He was wearing a navy blue baseball cap with the inscription "Da Kine", a navy blue nylon sweatsuit with a white stripe and white athletic shoes with a blue stripe.

Big Island police seek missing girl

Big Island police are looking for a 14-year-old girl who has been missing from her residence in Hawaiian Paradise Park home since March 14.

Brandi Oliveira is 5 feet 3 inches tall, weighs about 120 pounds and has a medium build, a tan complexion, brown hair and brown eyes.

Help requested in carjacking case

The police CrimeStoppers program has asked for help finding a man wanted for warrants and for questioning in an April "car-jacking" robbery case.

David James Taylor, 23, is being sought for violating the terms of his release in connection with a kidnapping case, police said.

Police also want to question him in connection with the April 23 robbery of a victim who was pushed from her car while stopped at a light at 5:30 a.m. The suspect in that case then fled in the car.

Taylor is described as being of African-American and Chinese ancestry, 6 feet tall, 170 pounds with a thin build. He has black hair, brown eyes and a dark complexion, with the word "Taylor" tattooed across his back and Chinese characters tattooed on his right bicep.
