• First Hawaiian Bank vice chairman DON HORNER has been elected to the bank's board of directors. Horner, 51, is in charge of retail banking at First Hawaiian, including the bank's 61-branch network in Hawai'i, Guam and Saipan. He also oversees consumer and business banking, trust, investments, private banking and operations, and serves as executive vice president of FHB's parent company, BancWest Corp.

STEVE OKAMOTO, veteran in the fields of charitable giving and gift annuities, tax-wise wills, year-end planning and other personal finance issues, has joined the American Cancer society, Hawai'i Pacific Inc., as director of estate and asset services. Okamoto has conducted seminars nationwide on financial and charitable donations planning, and is a past agent with Occidental Life Insurance Co.

EDWARD KAYA, a former C. Brewer & Co. Ltd. director of financial planning and analysis, has been named vice president of financial services/controller for Hawaiiana Management co. Ltd. Kaya joined Hawaiiana as controller in 1996, following a 15-year career in accounting, finance and business.

PHILLIP J. KEIPPER, former general manager of Waipahu Town Center and Kane'ohe Bay Shopping Center, has been named co-managing director of Avalon Development Co., a real estate acquisition, feasibility, management and development services firm. The company specifically provides real estate consulting services for investors seeking ownership management, development or joint-ownership possibilities of select properties in Hawai'i.

PAUL N. BRUSSOW, whose projects have included Honolulu International Airport, Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women and Children and Ala Moana Center, has been promoted, from associate to associate principal of the property and construction consulting firm Rider Hunt levett & Bailey. He is a nine-year veteran of construction-related experience, including two years as owner and operator of a construction business. As associate principal and manager of technical services, Brussow will oversee the technical staff, and is responsible for marketing Rider Hunt Levett & Bailey services. He was previously with the firm's Sydney, Australia, office.

MIKI YOSHIDA, formerly of Lexus of Hawai'i and BMW of Honolulu, and Mercedes-Benz of San Diego, has returned to Honolulu as part of the executive sales and leasing staff of TheoDavis Euromotors.

• St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawai'i has announced several appointments and promotions:

  • PAT KALUA, new associate director of nursing at St. Francis Medical Center, Liliha, responsible for day-to-day operations in patient services. She was formerly patient/family care coordinator for St. Francis Hospice.
  • ROBERT ZOLNIERZ, new director of pharmacy, St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawai'i, with clinical and operational oversight of pharmacies at both campuses of St. Francis Medical Center. He was formerly director of pharmacy services at Hays Medical Center in Kansas, and Baptist Hospital, Southeast Texas.
  • ELAINE SHIOZAWA, privacy officer, St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawai'i, overseeing implementation and compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), protecting patients' health information. She was formerly project manager at St. Francis Medical Center-West.
  • JAY PLISCO, director of materials management, St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawai'i, overseeing purchasing and distribution, maintenance of hospital supplies, sterilization, equipment acquisition and contract negotiation. He was formerly vice president of manufacturing at Andin International Inc., New York City.
