A six-year winning drought came to an end for the Hui Nalu Canoe Club yesterday.
Hui Nalu, a club based at Maunalua Bay, amassed 65 points in 36 races to win the Clement D. Pa'iaina Regatta at Ke'ehi Lagoon. About 1,500 paddlers of various ages participated in the opening regatta of the O'ahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association (OHCRA) season.
"We've always had a big club and it seems like we were always up there," Hui Nalu head coach Darryl Hara said. "But we haven't been this competitive in a long time. It's a pleasant way to start the season."
It was Hui Nalu's first regatta victory since the 1996 season. Hara said the club did not necessarily make significant gains in paddler registration this season. Instead, he said the key may have been "making a concerted effort on being competitive as well as being a family club."
But based on yesterday's overall results, Hui Nalu can not be automatically considered the OHCRA favorite this season because of its victory.

Only 12 points separated the top five teams yesterday. Lanikai was second with 62 points, followed by Outrigger (59), Hui Lanakila (58) and Kailua (53). The standings could have been even closer had Kailua not lost seven points due to disqualifications.

Waikiki Surf Club won the A division for smaller clubs with 23 points.
"It's going to be a battle all season long," Hara said. "And I think everybody welcomes that because it pushes everybody to a higher level."
Lanikai head coach Kalani Irvine added: "I don't think you can count out any of those top five teams. It's going to be fun watching how this thing plays out."
Hui Nalu won eight races yesterday: boys 14, boys 15, women freshman, women sophomore, women senior, women open-4, women 35 and women 55.
"Right now, our women are our strongest group," Hara said. "We can depend on points coming from them week in and week out."
The Hui Nalu crew of Keala Hironaka-Tampon, Catherine Fuller, Nikki Queyrel, Gail Kaaialii, Julie Aio and Kaui Pelekane won the prestigious women's senior race by 13 seconds over Kailua.
Queyrel, Kaaialii and Pelekane also paddled on the winning women's sophomore crew.
"It's an awesome feeling because we did our part to help the club win the regatta," Pelekane said. "I guess the pressure is on now for us to be in contention every week."
Hui Lanakila finished with a regatta-high nine race victories, including an impressive performance by its open men.
The Hui Lanakila crew of Raven Aipa, Greg Poole, Jed Gushman, Tomas Schlotman, Manny Kulukulualani and Kalama Heine won the prestigious men's senior race by seven seconds over Outrigger.
Hui Lanakila also won the men's freshman and men's sophomore races, as well as the men's novice A and men's novice B races.
"It was a good performance, but I think we got lucky," said Aipa, who is also the Hui Lanakila men's coach. "A lot of the other clubs didn't bring out their best paddlers, so we cannot take too much out of this."
In particular, the vaunted Lanikai men were missing several key paddlers yesterday for various reasons.
"They'll get motivated and come out eventually," Irvine said. "At least I hope so."
Lanikai's strength yesterday was its youth paddlers. Of Lanikai's six race victories, four came from youth crews (boys 12, mixed 12, girls 14 and boys 16). The youth paddlers accounted for 29 of the club's 62 total points.
The second regatta of the OHCRA season is Sunday at Kailua Beach Park.
"I don't know what's going to happen," Hara said. "But it sure is more fun to be a part of something like this rather than having one club run away with it."

Kane'ohe wins second in a row: The Kane'ohe Canoe Club made it two-for-two this season after winning the Waikiki Yacht Club Regatta yesterday at Ma'ili Beach.
