Hawai'i fifth in World Surfing

Hawai'i placed fifth in the final standings of the Quiksilver World Surfing Games yesterday at Durban, South Africa.

Kekoa Bacalso of Mililani placed fifth in the junior surfing division (ages 18 and younger). He was eliminated in the consolation final.

Kristen Quizon of Wai'anae was eliminated in the consolation semifinals of the open women's surfing division.

South Africa captured the team title, followed by Australia, Brazil and France. Hawai'i was the only team in the top five that didn't use professional competitors.

More than 600 competitors participated in the nine-day event, which is considered the Olympics of surfing.

SAILING

• UH tied for fourth: The University of Hawai'i coed sailing team went 3-2 and was tied for fourth after the first day of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association North American Team Race Championships yesterday at Ke'ehi Lagoon.

Harvard and defending champion Georgetown are tied for first at 5-0, followed by Tufts (Mass.) at 4-1. Hawai'i is tied with Charleston (S.C).

Thirty of 66 first-round-robin races were completed yesterday. The top four teams after the round robin advance to the championships.

Racing continues today and tomorrow starting at 9:45 a.m.

UH's team includes Molly O'Bryan, Sarah Hitchcock, Bryan Lake, Joey Pasquali, Lindsay Peters, Ann Feeley-Summerl and Adam Corpuz-Lahne.
