Wie makes history at Manoa Cup

By Catherine E. Toth

Michelle Wie made history today, becoming the first female golfer to advance to the second round of the 2002 Manoa Cup at 'Oahu Country Club.

The 12-year-old beat out 54-year-old Sam Oishi, 4 and 2 in match play. Oishi conceded on the final hole, the par-3 7th, after Wie landed her tee shot about five feet from the hole. (Oishi's shot sailed over the green.)

"It's just myself (out there)," said Oishi, who had played in the tournament 15 times. "She's been doing all right ... But I ran out of energy."

Oishi started the first round with a double-bogey on the opening hole, putting Wie up. Even though Wie bogeyed five times on the first nine, which started on the 10th hole, she still led 1-up at the turn. Through all 16 holes, Oishi never took the lead.

Missing putts on the first nine, Wie regained her confidence in her short game, sinking a critical putt on the par-3 4th hole after a poorly placed first shot to keep lead, 2-up.

"I'm good at clutch putts," Wie said.

Though she out-drove Oishi by about 50 yards on every hole, Wie said her swing was "funky."

"My swing wasn't good today," she said. "My dad (her caddy) told me to straighten it out, not to move my head."

Last year Wie was the first female player to qualify in the 93-year history of the Manoa Cup. She lost in the first round.
