HONOLULU

Japanese join Waikiki project

The Japan-America Society of Hawai'i is joining the members of the Waikiki Ohana Workforce in an effort to clean Waikiki Beach on June 15. Volunteers will meet at the Duke Kahanamoku Statue at 7 a.m. and walk the beach with garbage bags and cleaning supplies.

Joining the society for the sixth year in a row are the members of The Japan-America Society of Miyakonojo, Kagoshima Prefecture. First-time participants include members from The Japan-America Society of Fukuoka, Fukuoka Prefecture, and the Saint Louis School Japanese Club.

Mililani meeting on arts center

Community meetings will be held in Mililani Mauka tonight and Thursday to brainstorm ideas for a proposed area performing and fine arts center.

The meetings will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Castle & Cooke sales office at 95-1091 Ainamakua Drive, and Thursday at Mililani Town Association Recreation Center 6 at 95-1101 Ainamakua Drive.

A community group hopes to raise an estimated $12 million to $15 million for the "O'ahu Arts Center" project through fund-raising and grants.
