Mols, Santos excelled on mound, at plate

Kailua's Kamaile Santos missed several games early in the season, but was in peak form for the OIA Tournament, where he batted 9-for-13 with nine RBIs, and picked up a win and two saves.

Two ace pitchers who could inflict just as much damage with their bats share Player of the Year honors in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Eastern Division.

Roosevelt left-hander Chris Mols and Kailua right-hander Kamaile Santos garnered the top votes from division coaches two weeks ago.

Both are seniors.

Mols, a first-team OIA East all-star last year, took his game to another level this season. He went 5-1 with two saves in the regular season, striking out 48 in 33 innings.

"He was maxing out at about 82-83 (mph), but the key for him is he can mix up speeds," Rough Riders coach Kerry Higa said. "With his changeup, you can't tell what it is when it comes off his hand, and he has a curve he can control for strikes."

When he wasn't pitching, Mols played right field and batted .444 with three home runs and 21 RBIs in helping the Rough Riders to an 8-2 record and a co-division championship.

Santos struck out 11 in the opener against Castle, but he injured his right hand two weeks later and sat out several games. By the OIA tournament, however, Santos was in peak form.

His four-day, four-game totals in the tournament: nine hits in 13 at-bats (.692), with six doubles and nine RBIs, plus a win and two saves to lead the Surfriders to their third straight OIA title.

Roosevelt's Chris Mols went 5-1 with 48 strikeouts in 33 innings, and batted .444 with three home runs and 21 RBIs during the regular season. He helped the Rough Riders to an 8-2 record and the OIA East co-championship.

Santos is joined on the OIA East all-star first team by two teammates: first baseman Jarid Kawamoto and designated hitter Cody Teixeira-Vickery. Kawamoto was one of four valedictorians at Kailua's graduation.

Mols also had two teammates on the first team: outfielders Corey Higa and Matt Terukina. Higa batted .419, scored 19 runs and stole eight bases. Terukina hit .625, with two home runs, 12 RBIs and eight stolen bases.

Moanalua placed two players on the first team — second baseman Geoffrey Say (.514 avg.) and outfielder Jimmy Strombach — as did Castle — shortstop Jordan Tom and catcher Jason Taniguchi.

Rounding out the first team are Kalani third baseman Travis Canonizado and Kaiser utility player David Chu, who batted .417 with two home runs and 18 RBIs while playing catcher, third base, second base, shortstop and pitcher.

Kahuku's Syd Kawahakui, who guided the Red Raiders (8-2) to their first East co-championship, was named Coach of the Year.
