Kop, Agpaoa lead Manoa Cup qualifiers

Advertiser Staff

Four-time champion Brandan Kop shot a 4-under-par 67 yesterday to tie Junior Agpaoa for the low round in qualifying for the 2002 Manoa Cup golf tournament at O'ahu Country Club.

Kop, who won the prestigious match play event in 1983, '86, '97 and '98, and Agpaoa headed a record number of 124 players attempting to earn one of 63 qualifying spots. Defending champion Ryan Koshi was awarded the No. 1 seed.

Among those who made the qualifying cut of 5-over 76 was Punahou School seventh-grader Michelle Wie, who shot a 74.

The first two rounds of match play will be held today, starting at 7 a.m.

SAILING

• UH coed team ousted: The seventh-ranked University of Hawai'i coed sailing team barely missed qualifying for today's final round of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association North American Team Race Championships in waters off Ke'ehi Lagoon.

The Rainbows lost to Tufts University in the final race of yesterday's round-robin competition to finish fifth out of 12 teams with a 7-4 record. A Hawai'i win would have forced a three-way sail-off among UH, Tufts and Charleston for the final qualifying spot.

The top four teams — Harvard (11-0), Georgetown (10-1), Tufts (9-2) and Charleston (8-3) — will compete for the championship today with a double round-robin starting at 9:45 a.m.

VOLLEYBALL

• USA to Switzerland: Former Rainbow Wahine Robyn Ah Mow, Heather Bown and Therese Crawford, and NCAA Player of the Year Logan Tom, are part of the U.S. Women's National Team traveling to Switzerland for the Montreux Volley Masters.

The eight-team field is broken into two pools. The United States, currently ranked No. 5 in the world, will be a member of Pool B and play a round-robin schedule against No. 2 Cuba, No. 3 China and The Netherlands, ranked 11th in the world to start the season.

Pool A is No. 1 Russia, No. 4 Brazil, No. 7 Italy and No. 10 Japan.

The tournament begins today, but the United States does not start until tomorrow, when it meets China. Tomorrow, the U.S. will play Cuba before closing out pool play Friday.

The top two teams in each pool advance to the semifinal round Saturday, with the championship scheduled for Sunday.

CHURCH SERVICE

• Ex-NFL lineman to speak: Mickey Marvin, a former All-Pro offensive lineman with the Oakland Raiders, will be the guest speaker at the Honolulu First Church of the Nazarene on Sunday.

Marvin, who played 11 seasons as the Raiders' starting right guard, will speak on what the difference of having faith in Jesus Christ makes on and off the football field.

Marvin will speak during the 10:40 a.m. service. The church is located at 408 N. Judd St.
