At Native Books in Kapalama, the focus this month is on men.

The experimental gallery at 1244 N. School St. provides exhibition space for the Native Hawaiian community.

From 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, inventor Kaipo Lum will demonstrate a fast-paced card game, "Ku I Ka Moku: A Strategy Game of Power and Conquest," at Native Books, Ward Centre. (Also, from 2 to 4 p.m. June 22, he'll take the game to Native Books' School Street branch.)

"Na Kane Kahiko: The Men of Old," an exhibit featuring pen-and-ink drawings (including this Kimo Zablan work), opens with a reception at 3 p.m. June 15. Jerry Walker, a genealogist and master of traditional hand-to-hand fighting or lua, will talk on "Kamehameha and His Children" at 4 p.m.

A final program honoring men will be from 2 to 3 p.m. June 29 on School Street, when kumu lua Ramsey Taum presents "Lua, the Hawaiian Art of War and Weaponry."

Don't try this at home

The site is called Way Cool Surgery, but you be the judge. There, you can view video clips of heart bypass surgery, as broadcast over closed-circuit TV.

This is a companion site for the Mount Carmel, Calif./COSI Surgical Suite, and is aimed at middle school and high school students.

Fans of horror flicks no doubt will be enthralled, but the site has more in mind than a voyeuristic tour of some guy's clogged arteries. The site also aims to teach students how to reduce their risk of heart disease and to encourage kids to jump into healthcare careers. Click on http://waycoolsurgery.com.

Underwear overview

Lingerie shopping might be even be more intimidating than browsing for bathing suits. But a woman, er, well briefed in tricks to flatter her body type might fare better. The June issue of Cosmopolitan offers these tips:

  • For a boyish body, create the illusion of curves with high-cut bottoms, or shaped tops, such as a padded bra or teddy, triangle-shaped bra or baby-doll camisole.
  • Loose-fitting camisoles, baby dolls and tap pants are flattering to not-so-flat tummies. Create the look of a slimmer waist with a corset, and use enhanced tops to draw the eye away from the midsection.
  • Women with lower-half woes might try panties in a slimming fabric. Bikini briefs, however, should be banned from the bureau. Also, a halter bra can minimize wide hips by making shoulders look broader.
